Digital Foundry's investigations are always enlightening.
I think we can say definitively that ND are the leaders in console gaming tech. This is the second time in 4 years they've set a new standard in the graphics department.
As amazing as Killzone 2 was to look at it took GG 4 years to put out just the 1 game. Naughty Dog is halving their dev time and still blowing minds.
It's for this kind of stuff that we really do need some kind of official game de...
I know that ultimately GOTY will go to either Uncharted 2 or MW2, but can't help but wish for a little more praise to be showered upon this year's little action game that could.
For my money inFamous was to this year what Uncharted was to 2007, an underrated, underplayed, and under-advertised minor masterpiece.
As good as all the PS3 exclusives are this year there will probably only be two or three in a group of the top 5 contenders because reviewers won't want to seem PS3 biased.
Wow! Did I just write that? Boy have we sure come a long way since 2007 when PS3 games didn't even get listed as GOTY nominees.
Well at least she still puts out from time to time, unlike a certain other console who just wants me to waggle her playstick wildly at every encounter.
Eurogamer gave the original Uncharted a 9 so it's likely they'll rate this game very highly.
Edge on the other hand I can't vouch for. I just don't get those guys at all.
What the hell is up with that? The cinema mode in Uncharted 2 isn't even mentioned in the written review and it trashes the one in Halo 3 and even a lot of PC games.
Standards are set by standard setting games. The bar for 3ps's hasn't moved an inch from GeOW2 and realistically even that game sat in Uncharted 1's shadow in terms of presentation, story, and graphics.
Uncharted 2 is a bar setter, it's better than the last comparable thing that came before it and in my opinion deserves recognition for that now in the same way Goldeneye, Halo, and COD4 did in their times for their respective achievements.
Does a much better job of explaining why they knocked off so many 10ths of a point, but I'm still unconvinced.
One annoying stealth section (which only IGN has complained about so far) and rooms filling with enemies is hardly much of a complaint. I'll take rooms filling with a set number of enemies over endlessly respawning ones any day of the week.
It makes more sense to kill a set number of baddies entering a room than it is to fight an endless stream of them until...
The Fallout 3 thing I understand. IGN's has psudo-segregated teams for Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, and PC, so while the playstation boys feel like MGS4 was worth a 10, ultimately everyone on the company gets to vote on IGN's official GOTY award.
And again, IGN chose a "safe" game Fallout 3.
The words that came to my mind when I watched this. It's clearly a phenomenal game, but IGN always uses 9.4's and 9.5's when they think a game is great, but don't have the cajones to score the game higher (which naturally creates more controversy).
I mean really, Uncharted 2 has the same score as Gears of War 2 but it has so much more going for it right now than Gears did last year.
I don't like most sports games, but it's nice to see a sports game developer actually putting work into making their game.
I could never understand why FPS developers can create visual landmarks like Killzone 2 and Crysis with insane amounts of visual detail and engines that use a crap load of processing power across varied levels, but a game that takes place on pretty much the same green field every time doesn't look even remotely as good.
Which is pretty funny sinc...
This review is the equivalent of Bill Gates appearing in a John Hodgman/Justin Long Mac commercial and buying a Mac.
Yes Eurogamer is particularly harsh on PS3 games, maybe even unfair a lot of the time. But they gave the original Uncharted a 9 so they'll most likely dig this game too.
When you think about it this perfect score is bringing down Uncharted's avg.
Let me repeat that, perfect scores bring down Uncharted's avg critic score.
But given the pre-release hype Uncharted 2 has I don't know if MW2 will be able to overcome it in terms of critical acclaim.
(Sales mean nothing. SEE Psychonauts & BGE)
You're absolutely right that mistakes with ports were made in the past, but this is 2009. We're to the point now where most games are fairly equal among the HD platforms.
And given the radically different architectures on each system there are natural performance differences. Assuming this guy isn't blowing smoke up our a$$es I've already accepted the fact that 360 versions usually have more stable framerate and anti-aliasing and the PS3 version has better motion blur and texture...
Ports from 360 to PS3 have become much better since 2007 and Sega has decent coding chops (think Valkyria and Yakuza). I still don't like it, but as long as it's not Sonic Team doing the port I'm still going to approach this game with a cautious optimism.
As an avid follower of Metacritic I have to say these guys are almost always off the mark regardless of console. I mean really, even the most reactionary fanboys can agree that inFamous deserves more than a 6 and Prototype more than a 5 out of 10.
850,000 consoles in two weeks is damned impressive and even with drops in the next couple of weeks this will probably be a million month for Sony.
And were not even near Christmas yet.
Saying Uncharted 2 will be better than MGS4 is like saying Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is better than Citizen Kane/Godfather type movies.
Uncharted will be unrivaled in it's genre and will probably end up as one of the best games of all time in the same way that Indy is, but in the end Uncharted as a series, thus far anyways, isn't thematically complex.
The MGS series is richer philosophically and politically (Western foreign policy dominance/the ri...
